Xpedition Archery – I was pretty frustrated being so close and not closing the deal
Tuesday, November 29, 2016 South Dakota Sports & Outdoors
"I've been hunting this particular boar for over a year. The first encounter I had with him was pretty brief! During what we call the off season we have feeder setups to try and lure these wild hogs in. Sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't. We have game cameras set up to try and pattern these wild beast but that's pretty hard to do as well. I had pictures of several hogs coming in and the big boar at random times. So I go one afternoon after work to hunt this setup. As the minutes ticked away in the Texas heat I had my bow hanging on my Limbsaver bow hanger and of course messing around on my phone. I look up and I see this devilish beast easing through staring a hole through me up in the ladder stand! How he knew I was there is beyond me. I tried reaching for my bow and the big boar just circled around me just out of range. I finally got my bow in hand and ready and he slowly disappeared into the thick brush. I was very upset for not being ready and very perplexed on the strange encounter. Several months later I was hunting the same stand and the same boar was coming in and I was ready to put an arrow through him. But as before it felt like he knew I was there and he never gave me an open shot. He would circle around me and stay just behind the thick brush were I couldn't get a clean shot. I was pretty frustrated being so close and not closing the deal. Our deer season finally rolls around and I of course had my mind set on whitetails. After a few trips to Oklahoma and then Abilene TX. I kinda forgot about the pigs for a while. We got back to hunting our home town areas for deer and with the weather being so hot we were having a hard time getting them to cooperate. I decided to move down into the creek bottoms where I had an old ladder stand set up. Not really expecting too much excitement I hear something behind me and I slowly turn around to see a big old cow moving through. Not at all what I was hoping for, then a few minutes pass by and I see something black coming through the trees. It was around 4:30 in the afternoon, I thought it was another cow coming through. As it got closer and closer I could tell it was the big boar I've been after. He would walk about five feet then stop, walk five more feet and stop! I had my Xpedition ready as he slowly and cautiously came down the trail through the thick brush. There was a big Bois D'arc tree with limbs all through the brush and close to the ground. The big boar finally came in range and I had to pick a spot through the tree and as I released the arrow it hit perfectly through the shoulders of the beast! I was so excited and relieved that I finally made it happen. After finding the boar piled up several 100 yards away I thought wow what a will to live. Toughest animals and by far some of the smartest I've ever hunted. The boar weighed in well over 300lbs with cutters over 4" long." #ishootxpedition
