This has been a time of introspection. Mitch and I have concluded that cafe ownership is no longer satisfying, nor particularly profitable for us. While we take great pride in creating a one of a kind experience, excellent product and good jobs for great people, we are thrilled with the idea of a fresh start. These past few years have been challenging, that's for sure, but as doors closed shut (sometimes with a bang!) others have opened. While we leap into the unknown, we are increasingly elated by this feeling of buoyant weightlessness, the lack of responsibility for the living, breathing animal that is a cafe (or three). No more early morning SOS texts, no public scrutiny of our every action, no payroll, no broken equipment, no Yelp reviews, no internet trolls, nada. And in the quiet, early morning light, we look at each other, smile, then burst out laughing.
We don't see our Youngstown experiment as a failure but a way home. It sounds trite, but unless circumstances had not gone so awry, we would never have opened ourselves up to other possibilities, other projects, other places.
We plan on hunkering down for the winter, roasting coffee for our online customers and our wholesale clients while we plan our next project. Stay tuned, please. Our story will continue...and it is a good one.
