"I am interested in describing the beauty I feel in the natural world that goes beyond the superficial and encourages and reminds me to be at my best. This beauty is not simple but complex and includes the nitty gritty of survival that is all of life. Nature knows it must support every level in order for the total to be healthy and therefore beautiful. The process of being in its presence as I paint, reminds and includes me in this understanding.

The careful study of edgeless layers, brings to my process of painting a quality of abstraction that still maintains a sense of place. This space reflects an external landscape that is initiated from a deep internal experience."
- Susan Wahlrab

After graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design and joining the Experimental Etching Studio in Boston, Susan built a reputation creating many-layered intaglios and monoprints that were shown and collected internationally. Teaching 2-D design, drawing and printmaking at Brown University, Framingham State College and The Maine College of Art, she eventually moved to Vermont in 1992 where along with raising a family, she supports herself full-time with the sale of her work.

Changing mediums from printmaking to watercolor at the time of this move, Susan expanded her use of color, but brought the complex development of intaglio to this unforgiving process. The layering of watercolor in a variety of swirling, painterly strokes of pigment is so unique that, to a person, all who have seen the work have stated that they have never seen anything like them! Landscape holds the mystery of life that is hidden and nurtured from external unconsciousness.

These paintings represent Susan’s time walking, playing and sitting in stillness in nature’s presence to investigate and be included in this understanding.
